Students in Durango are likely to be part of the Durango 9-R School District, where they can attend institutions home to pre-k through twelfth grade. The schools are highly rated and very popular amongst Durango residents. However, parents have more options with a good amount of charter and private schools throughout the city. 

Residents of Durango can also take advantage of higher education institutions, with the most notable being Fort Lewis College. The Public Liberal Arts College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and offers 30 different bachelor’s degree programs.

RECREATION IN DURANGO, CO

Recreation is one of the many things Durango, Colorado, is not short on and is one of the main reasons it is a sought-after tourist destination. Within the city limits, you will find art galleries, shopping, and renowned dining spots. 

Like many historic cities, Main Avenue is where you will find the most to do as well as plenty of historic architecture to admire. The best part of Durango is that there is always something to do. Some events to note are the Durango Ragtime and Early Jazz Festival and the popular Snowdown Festival.

What really sets Durango recreation apart from other cities is its outdoor recreation. It is most famously home to the Purgatory Resort, which is about 25 miles north of Downtown Durango. The ski resort hosts shopping and dining. Most importantly, it offers world-class skiing with tourists traveling from all over the world to ski down its slopes. For outdoor activities in the summer, pay a visit to the Animas River Valley, where you can go whitewater rafting, kayaking, fly fishing, and canoeing.
